The shipyard portal crane ‚Goliath‘ in the Danish Odense: At a height of 375 ft. and 1,000 ton carrying capacity, this is one of the world’s largest portal cranes, designed as the successor to the shipyard crane overturned by hurricane blasts in 1999. Due to this catastrophe, particular attention was paid to wind safety during construction. 68 helical bevel gearboxes type SK 9082.1AZKSH- IEC180 drive the main winch and trolley winch. 8 helical bevel gearboxes type SK 9022.1 AZDH- 100L/4 are used for the cabin drive.

Precise straight-running and positional accuracy

NORD carriage drives ensure extraordinary straight-running precisions. For example, the shipyard portal crane GOLIATH, has a positional accuracy of 0.08” to 0.20”, even under the most extreme conditions. State of the art frequency inverters like the NORD SK 700E is used to ensure this positional precision. The SK 700E allows soft start-up, and has defined dynamic braking to guarantee GOLIATH will take loads exactly to there intended locations.
