Foreign subsidiaries in France, Sweden and the USA celebrate an anniversary
For Getriebebau Nord, three successful decades as an international gear unit manufacturer began in 1979 with the foundation of subsidiaries in three different countries.
In the classic mechanical engineering nations of the USA, France and Sweden, NORD was quickly able to build up a large number of regular customers. From the very start, NORD not only offered short delivery times and a dependable local presence with personal advice for applications, but also quality products which were second to none with regard to technology and efficiency, setting new standards. The early years of the first international subsidiaries saw the invention and development of the unicase concept, whose design principles soon became an example to the world in the field of gear unit construction.

Even today, the first three foreign subsidiaries form the cornerstones of the activities of the company, which has now been established for 44 years, and make a significant contribution to sales and profits. In all three countries there are several bases and assembly factories. The increase in the number of employees effectively demonstrates the successful course of expansion. For example, the initial handful of employees in the USA has now grown into a team of over 161.
Since the 1980s NORD has expanded its global presence with the foundation of companies in more than thirty other countries in Europe and Asia as well as North, South and Central America. In this phase, the medium-sized company rapidly developed from a mechanical specialist to a supplier of complete systems and has long been one of the leaders in the drive technology industry.

Who wouldn´t know our US subsidiary, at least by sight? Indeed a photo of the Waunakee location is included in almost every NORD publication. The rise of the first of NORD´s subsidiaries outside Europe strikingly mirrors the American Way of Life.
The NORD GEAR history began in 1979 with rented rooms in Middleton/Wisconsin, in the vicinity of the automobile manufacturers and the industrial centres in the Northwest of the USA. Only two years later the Waunakee establishment marked the second development stage. It still is the head office today. As requirements increased, the existing buildings were extended and commissioned in 1987, 1999 and 2007.

A kitchen, an idea, two people, the third sales subsidiary!
The kitchen is the centre of a house where one likes to meet for a bit of talking. That‘s exactly what Mr. Edholm and Mr. Jansson did in Stockholm 25 years ago. The two of them were thinking of founding a company trading in geared motors to be imported from Germany as the slogan „Made in Germany“ seemed to promise good business.
The idea was translated into reality – a subsidiary of Bargteheide-based Getriebebau NORD was built up. Over the years continuous investing resulted in an important establishment to develop in Upplands Väsby with an assembly shop, service station, and sales network of its own.

NORD first came to this country famous for its wines, the Eiffel Tower and its excellent cuisine in 1979 and stayed. In fact NORD has even become involved with two famous Paris landmarks – the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de la Défense. Anybody mounting the elevators of these famous structures to rise 276m high can rely on the wire ropes to be safeguarded against gusts of wind by NORD shaft-mounted geared motors and enjoy a smooth and troublefree ride. No need at all for a tiring ascent using the staircases!
In 1988 the French branch moved to Villepinte from Pont-Evêque near Lyon where the first sales agency had been founded. Villepinte still is the head office from where the management controls sales activities in all of the country. Based on successful business results expansion continued in1998 when the assembly shop in Vieux-Thann/Alsace was built with the aim of reducing the leadtimes to the subsidiaries in Southern Europe on the one hand and of providing enough room (5,000m2 in all) to allow for the assembly of 400 geared motors at a time on the other. Later on the merger of the head office and the assembly shop in 2004 resulted in strengthening our market position in France and substantially increasing the sales.
