Bargteheide – Gas explosion-protected drives in “increased safety” (Ex e) from NORD are blanket approved for operation with a frequency inverter. Users can thus tap high savings potentials: In many cases, the geared motors can now replace the often more than twice as heavy drives with an “explosion-proof encapsulation” (Ex de) design. Ex e units cost up to 40% less than these. The new systems are suitable for use in zones 1 and 2 in temperature class T3.

Until now, a combination of a motor and a frequency inverter had to be in-spected on location in a time- and cost-intensive procedure. This routine is now replaced by an EC-Type Examination Certificate for the motors from German metrology institute PTB in Braunschweig. All drives feature a triple thermistor for direct temperature monitoring and are fitted with special type plates which show the specifications required for inverter operation. A user-friendly documentation with precise directions ensures safe project planning. The drives can be supplied on short notice.

Users are free to chose any type of frequency inverter, in keeping with the Ex-amination Certificate, including the combination of NORD motors and inverters from other manufacturers. However, various many parameters for safe opera-tion must be observed. NORD experts are available for individual consulting to help users decide whether Ex e systems are a technically reasonable solution for a given application. With more than 10,000 ATEX systems a year delivered worldwide, the company is one of the most experienced suppliers of drive technology for hazardous areas. The application range for the Ex e drives includes, amongst others, chemical and petrochemical plants, bio gas and sewage plants and paint shops. In addition to the new Ex e solutions, NORD continues to supply speed-controlled ATEX systems featuring Ex de, Ex n (“non sparking”) or DIN EN 50281-1-1-compliant, dust explosion protected motors for zones 21 and 22. Users can choose between eight different gearbox types (including three helical inline models) featuring torques up to 200,000 Nm. Customer-specific requirements can be implemented even in extraordinary cases, such as models for inclined installation or problematic environments (e.g. cooling air temperatures above 40 °C or especially high axial or radial forces).
